Sport Shooting with Air Rifles, Piston Rifles Versus PCP Rifles. The sport of sport shooting is very interesting and attractive in itself, but if we involve bullet and arrow launching instruments with PCP technology it becomes much more exciting. Today we are going to talk about the sport of sport shooting with air rifles with PCP technology and its available models.
Traditional Piston Rifles Versus PCP Rifles
As we all know, in piston rifles their main characteristic is the brittle barrel that allows the piston chamber to be reloaded when the barrel breaks, so far so good, we have become accustomed to them for decades, it is probable and perhaps a 100 % correct that we all have had a piston rifle as the first air rifle we used when starting out in the sport of air rifle shooting.
Piston rifles over time have become very very cheap without losing quality, this is because the piston rifle loading system is not advanced, it is rather mechanical.
The accuracy of a piston rifle is quite good, if it is used correctly continuously it does not require demanding maintenance.
Regarding the speed they reach and the caliber in which the piston or spring compressed air rifles are presented, we have that calibers of:
- 4.5mm with a speed of 220 meters per second
- 5.5mm with a speed of 180 meters per second
- 6.35mm with a speed of 140 meters per second
Likewise, the terminal velocity of the shot depends on the quality of the weapon and the finishes in the manufacture.
Regarding PCP rifles
These rifles are currently the most appreciated by the community of athletes and lovers of shooting with compressed air rifles, the technology of Compressed gas guns, also known as CG guns, has evolved very well, if a user wishes to practice sport hunting the Compressed gas guns or PCP rifle is the best option.
The firing process in a PCP rifle is at first glance similar to that of a spring or piston air rifle, the rifle accumulates air which is then pushed into the barrel to propel the pellet to a very high final velocity. But they begin to differ when we see that we can regulate the air valve to be released according to a precision that we want to give to each shot.
Regarding the speed they reach and the caliber in which the PCP compressed air rifles are presented, we have calibers of:
- 4.5mm with a speed of 340 meters per second
- 5.5mm with a speed of 270 meters per second
- 6.35mm with a speed of 220 meters per second
As we can see in all the most commonly used calibers, PCP rifles far outperform piston or spring air rifles, these PCP rifles are very simple and easy to maintain, it is likely that if the user uses low quality pellets metal residues remain in the barrel and therefore you must be aware of taking greater care in cleaning.
CONCLUSION
From what we have seen today, if we want to learn the sport of shooting with a compressed air rifle, we can start with a piston rifle and then, as we gain experience, move on to a PCP or Compressed gas guns, also known as CG guns.
