The bullpup design has revolutionized airgunning by offering full-length barrel performance in an incredibly compact and maneuverable package. Among the pioneers and masters of this form factor is FX Airguns, whose Wildcat series has long been celebrated for its ergonomic excellence and precision. The FX Wildcat MkIII continues this legacy, evolving into an even more potent and versatile hunting and shooting platform, ready to handle the demands of modern airgun projectiles like slugs.
About FX Airguns: A Legacy of Precision Engineering
Founded in 1999 by the visionary Fredrik Axelsson in Mariestad, Sweden, FX Airguns has become synonymous with innovation and unparalleled quality in the airgun world. Axelsson’s journey began with a personal quest to create the ultimate air rifle, driven by a deep passion for accuracy and consistency. Over more than two decades, FX Airguns has solidified its reputation as a global leader, holding numerous patents and consistently introducing groundbreaking technologies. Each FX airgun is a testament to meticulous craftsmanship, hand-built by a team of highly skilled Swedish artisans and engineers. The company is particularly renowned for its proprietary “Smooth Twist X” (STX) barrel system, highly modular designs, and sophisticated regulating systems, all of which contribute to exceptional tunability and a superior shooting experience.
Unpacking the Features of the FX Wildcat MkIII
The FX Wildcat MkIII builds upon the highly successful foundation of its predecessors, incorporating significant upgrades to enhance power, consistency, and versatility, particularly for shooting slugs and heavier pellets.
Key features and innovative design elements include:
- Bullpup Design: The MkIII retains the signature Wildcat bullpup form factor. This design places the action and magazine behind the trigger, resulting in an exceptionally compact rifle that maintains a long, accurate barrel. It’s perfectly balanced and ergonomically designed for comfortable off-hand shooting.
- Massive Power Plenum: A primary enhancement is the integration of a massive 89cc Power Plenum. This increased air volume directly translates to greater muzzle energy and extended range capabilities, especially when propelling heavier projectiles.
- Dual AMP Regulators: Precision and consistency are paramount, achieved through dual externally adjustable FX AMP Regulators. These regulators ensure highly stable air pressure delivery to the plenum, shot after shot, critical for tight groups.
- Advanced Power Adjuster: The MkIII introduces a new rear power adjuster, offering both micro and macro adjustments to the hammer spring. With 7 distinct presets and an additional Allen wrench adjustment for fine-tuning, users have unprecedented control over the rifle’s power output.
- Enhanced Airflow and Valving: Significant improvements have been made to the internal airflow within the main block and the valving system, optimizing efficiency and further boosting performance.
- Upgraded Magazine System: The rifle now accommodates the larger capacity FX Side-Shot magazines, dramatically increasing the shot count compared to the previous 8-shot limit, allowing for longer shooting sessions without reloads.
- FX Smooth Twist X (STX) Barrel System: The Wildcat MkIII leverages the world-renowned FX STX Barrel System, guaranteeing superior accuracy. All MkIII models come standard with Superior STX Barrel Liners, housed in an interchangeable system. This allows users to easily swap to Superior STX Heavy liners (sold separately) specifically designed for optimal performance with heavier slugs. Additional barrel kits are available in various calibers (.177 through .30) for ultimate versatility.
Comparison with Similar Airguns
The FX Wildcat MkIII stands as a leading contender in the compact, high-performance bullpup segment. Several other excellent airguns offer similar features or cater to comparable user needs, though often with differing approaches.
- FX Maverick Compact: The Maverick, also from FX, is another highly modular and powerful bullpup. While the Wildcat MkIII focuses on a refined, integrated bullpup design, the Maverick features a more prominent blocky action and can be more overtly tuned and customized in terms of barrel and bottle configurations. The Wildcat often appeals to those who prefer a sleeker, more classic bullpup aesthetic while still demanding high power.
- FX Dreamline Lite/Compact: The Dreamline series is known for its versatility, allowing for various configurations, including compact bullpup setups. While sharing FX’s advanced STX barrel technology and regulating systems, the Wildcat MkIII’s inherent bullpup design is more purpose-built for that specific form factor, often featuring a larger integrated plenum (like the 89cc on the MkIII) specifically tuned for its compact dimensions and higher power demands.
- Kral Puncher Mega W/S: Kral Arms offers popular bullpup models that provide significant power and good accuracy at a more accessible price point. While capable, they generally don’t feature the same level of advanced regulation (like dual AMP regulators), fine-tunability, or the sophisticated STX barrel system found in the FX Wildcat MkIII.
- PCP Bullpups from other Brands (e.g., AirMaks Katran, Huben K1): Other manufacturers produce high-performance bullpups. Rifles like the AirMaks Katran offer excellent build quality and accuracy, often with a focus on competitive shooting ergonomics. The Huben K1 is known for its semi-automatic capability and raw power. While these are strong competitors, the Wildcat MkIII differentiates itself with its unique combination of FX’s legendary STX barrel system, advanced dual regulation, and refined internal power adjustments, all packaged in a beloved, proven bullpup form.
In conclusion, the FX Wildcat MkIII represents a masterful evolution of a beloved bullpup platform. Its blend of compact ergonomics, significant power enhancements, and unparalleled tunability makes it an outstanding choice for hunters and enthusiasts who demand top-tier performance in a highly maneuverable and capable package, especially for shooting slugs.
