They have a wide, round head that cuts large holes in paper targets. Wadcutters are good for plinking, and some competitive shooting events have their shooters use them. They range from ultra-cheap target pellets to expensive tournament wadcutters.
Wadcutters for hunting?
Some hunters think that wadcutters work better on small game than domed or pointed buckshot, but I haven’t been able to unearth any hard evidence to prove it. The theory is that wadcutters don’t penetrate very far, so they function as a kind of poor man’s hollow point.
Vaulted pellets are more streamlined than other types of ammunition. That means they hit harder at long ranges. They were designed as airguns became more powerful and wadcutters began to droop and lose accuracy due to wind resistance.
These pellets have a heavier tip, which generates good knockdown power compared to other pellets. They maintain much of that power at long range as well, making them a very good choice for hunting.
Domed pellets hit harder than pointed pellets, but they are not designed specifically for hunting. That said, they do a great job as long as your airgun is powerful enough to put them to good use. They don’t penetrate as well as pointed shot, but are usually heavier and hit harder.
