Obviously, pointed pellets are designed to penetrate and that’s an advantage even when using an air rifle that has little firepower.
They are a good choice for mid-range vermin as they cut through thicker hair and skin.
They also have some of the same aerodynamic benefits as Vaults, in another reference we can see that they retain speed better than Wadcutters, so they will shoot more flats and penetrate well at range.
One thing that sets pointed pellets apart from wadcutters and domed pellets is the skirt, which tends to be longer to compensate for the lighter tip.
Some of the better pointed shot manufacturers, such as Beeman and ARS, also include thick midpoint bands that are designed to engage the rifling and give the shot more spin.
The hollow point pellets, what should we expect?
When fired from a powerful airgun, the hollow point pellets expand for maximum damage.
A lot of power at a long distance or a little power at a short distance would be the most appropriate, but there are variations.
Like hollow point bullets, these pellets are designed to kill so they are excellent for hunting.
They tend to be a bit lighter than wadcutters, which makes them fly faster obviously.
As they expand on the target, they quickly discharge all of their energy. That makes for bigger wounds and better stopping power.
The downside is that hollow point pellets only expand if they travel fast so you need at least 1000 FPS to use them with a good shot guarantee.
