We have written a lot about air rifles, high power rifles and shotguns, but do we know how to differentiate them by their characteristics?
We are going to write in this edition, about the differences between a rifle and a shotgun.
Let’s meet the shotgun.
The shotgun is a firearm, smooth or rifled in which its correct use is held against the shoulder. It is a fairly light weapon that is used mainly in small game, in particular for hunting hares, birds and rabbits. It is also often used in pigeon and clay pigeon shooting competitions, being very versatile weapons.
The caliber that is most used for hunting and combat is 12, although other numbers are also used, such as 20 and 10. There are more types of calibers, but they are less used and more minority.
The range of the shotgun will also depend on the cartridge that is being used, it may have a greater or lesser effective range, but it is usually used for short distances.
Let’s meet the Rifle.
The rifle is a term of Anglo-Saxon origin (rifle, groove), with which any long weapon is called, such as rifles or carbines. There are different types of rifles, these can be muzzle-loading, breech-loading, word, bolt, semi-automatic or assault.
The term “rifle” comes from the fact that a rifle barrel has spiral grooves (called rifling) cut into it, which, when a bullet is fired, is forced into these grooves. It stands out for its shooting accuracy at long distances, and is usually used mainly for hunting big game.
One of the main differences between shotguns and rifles is the shot. Although it is true that the rifle has much more precision and strength, it is not used for all types of hunting. It is usually more geared towards hunting larger, more voluminous animals that can be reached from a long distance.
On the other hand, the shotgun is much better for small game, (in which animals such as birds and rabbits are found), since it is more effective for objects that are close and moving.
On the other hand, the rifle also delivers a perfect shot even if our prey is much further away. We also have the advantage that the shot is specific, since the accuracy of the rifle is greater.
The rifle has more power in the shot. Normally the rifles can have a range of an average of 800 meters. The bullets used for rifles are also different than those for shotguns. They are much smaller, between 6mm and 8mm, which helps them travel a longer distance, due to their lower weight.
