What ammunition do Airsoft pistols use?
Airsoft BBs are 6mm in diameter and are much softer than those used in airsoft guns. They are usually made of plastic and can have different weights. However, other materials are used, such as:
Tracer Pellets: BBs that glow in the dark. These are used with a device that ‘charges’ them before being ejected. Basically, it shines a bright light on them while they are still on the weapon.
Paintball BBs – These are used in some custom airsoft guns and are similar to those used in proper paintball guns.
Marker Pellets – These pellets will leave a colored mark where they hit and are made of silica.
Metal Pellets: These pellets are usually aluminum and are heavier than standard pellets and can cause injury on impact. Some people like them because they are considered more accurate since they are less affected by wind (due to their higher mass) than others.
Pellets made of synthetic materials that are more respectful with the environment than standard plastic. In many outdoor events, these types of pellets are mandatory when sweeping is not possible
Ceramic Pellets: Designed for target shooting, as these rather expensive BBs can penetrate security equipment.
Pellets, Diameter and weight.
As the vast majority of balls are 6mm in diameter, the different weights are dictated by the material being used. The lightest is around 0.12g, then you’ll typically find them at 0.20g, 0.25g, 0.28g up to about 0.40g. However, the most common are 0.12 g and 0.20 g.
