The piston rifle, description, Advantages and disadvantages of using it
This type of air rifle is the best known and used but like everything there are always things in favor and things against using it and we will see them below.
As we have already explained, it is driven by a spring, which is why its name comes from there, the user performs a “break the barrel” or “break” a lever either downwards, similar to breaking the barrel, or to the side , this depends on the manufacturer and the model used.
It is this action that compresses the spring and cocks the gun. After loading a pellet into the chamber and locking the barrel (or lever in place), the gun is ready to fire.
When you pull the trigger, the spring decompresses and pushes the piston forward, compressing the air in front of it behind the pellet. Once the force of the compressed air overcomes the resistance provided by the pellet in the chamber, it pushes the pellet down the rifled barrel and toward its target.
Advantages of using it
An all-in-one package, no need to worry about running out of CO2 and having to fit another canister or re-pump air into the gun. Relatively inexpensive, there are many to choose from and can typically be found holding either .177 cal or .22 cal pellets.
This type of rifle is widely used for pest control since it can be used repeatedly hundreds of times, it is low maintenance and its useful life is long.
Disadvantages of using it
Usually single shot, though you can get somewhere where you can load multiple buckshots at once, these are pretty rare.
This is due to vibrations and movement caused by the internal mechanism that moves the barrel just before the pellet has ejected.
